Web logs, or blogs, could give you the
travel bug
•Gridskipper.com: Launched in December, Gridskipper caters to the hip
traveler who has upgraded from hostels to hotel suites. Because it
posts several items a day, Gridskipper is the perfect diversion for
desk dwellers daydreaming about their next trip. Bonus: Entries are
searchable and well indexed, so vacation planners looking to rock out
in Reykjavik need only click on the "Nightlife" tab. Warning: This
site is not for the sober traveler: Half the entries on a given day
are booze-related.
•Savings Sleuth: The editors at Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel make
sure travelers never miss a deal with their blog. Recent postings
describe spectacularly cheap trips to Cape Town, South Africa, and how
to take the road less traveled through Eastern Europe. Bonus: Readers
write responses about whether the posted offers are the real deal.
Warning: Visit often, because many of the deals are limited.
•MyTripJournal.com: Feeling inspired? MyTripJournal allows travelers
to start free, personalized blogs with maps plotting their journeys,
along with e-mail notifications to friends and family when they post
updates. Bloggers can have a free site for 45 days and can post as
many as 20 photos. Bonus: Bloggers can control who sees their site (so
that drunken night in Dublin can remain under wraps). Warning: The
basic site is free, but a one-year site is $60, and a premium site is
$89.
•BootsnAll.com: For armchair travelers to those about to embark on a
round-the-world trip, BootsnAll.com offers a voyeuristic view of the
world at large. The site hosts many authors, whose blogs are
searchable by country or keyword. The home page includes links to the
most recently updated blogs, so readers can easily tell when favorites
have posted new adventures. Bonus: The Global Trip is an archived log
of one man's 16-month trip to just about everywhere. Warning: If this
site doesn't give someone the travel bug, nothing will.
•TravelPod.com: This is one of the first travel journal sites and an
excellent start for someone new to the blogosphere. TravelPod.com has
"Top 5" lists, a "quick search" list of 199 countries, clickable maps
and more. Bonus: "To Tierra del Fuego and Beyond" is the adventures of
a retired couple driving their Volkswagen van across South America.
Warning: Because this is such a good "starter" site, enthusiasts may
outgrow it quickly.
